New Junior Research Group for the Chemistry of Crystalline Solid Solutions

05/06/2025

Dr. Kazutaka Shoyama heads the new DFG-funded junior research group at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and the Center for Nanosystems Chemistry at the University of Würzburg.

Junior research group leader and habilitation candidate at the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy: Dr. Kazutaka Shoyama

The overarching goal is to combine synthetic organic chemistry with crystallography in order to establish a new field of research: Crystal Synthesis. Central to this effort is the design and structural control of solid solutions composed of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), aiming to create functional crystalline materials with tailored optical and electronic properties.

About the Reseacher

Kazutaka Shoyama studied chemistry at the University of Tokyo, where he received his PhD in 2016 under Prof. Eiichi Nakamura His doctoral work focused on the structure and formation mechanism of lead perovskite crystals. He then joined the University of Würzburg as a postdoctoral researcher in the group of Prof. Dr. Frank Würthner, where he later became a research associate responsible for crystallography within the subgroup for synthetic nanocarbons. Since September 2024, he has been heading an independent junior research group, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). He also began his habilitation process in May 2025.
