Description

Programme Overview

  • Functional materials is a interdisciplinary programme in the field of material sciences.
  • The programme focuses on the development and optimalisation of new materials with specific functions as well as their characterisation in terms of structure and properties.
  • The standard programme duration is 6 semesters for the bachelor's degree and 4 semesters for the master's degree.
  • The bachelor's programme can only be started in the winter semester, while the master's programme can begin in either winter or summer semester.

Job Prospects

  • With the broadly diversified programme in chemistry, physics, medicine and the engineering sciences, there are many opportunities to realize one's professional goals.
  • The need for well-trained, interdisciplinary graduates is confirmed by the demands of the economy.
  • Materials scientists often find employment in industrial research and development, but also the fields of administration, marketing, specialist management consulting, public service or university research.

Admission

  • Admission to the bachelor's programme is unrestricted. This means you can enrol until shortly after the start of the semester. There is no limit on the number of accepted applicants.
  • In order to be admitted to the master's programme, you will need to go through an aptitude screening.
  • Applications for the master's programme are open until January 15th for a start in the following summer semester, July 15th for a start in the following winter semester.
  • For general information related to enroling in and pursuing a degree programme, please contact the Student's Affairs Office.

Structure, Objectives and Content

  • In addition to engineering sciences, chemistry, physics and the life sciences are integral parts of the programme.
  • Students learn the theoretical and practical fundamentals of these subjects during the bachelor's programme.
  • In the Bachelor's thesis, the skills acquired are applied in the laboratory, working on a scientific problem.
  • In the master's programme, you have the opportunity to individually design your course of study and choose one of two areas of specialization.
  • For more information on the content of the programme, please visit the department's website (in German only).

Doctoral Studies

  • Around 40 to 50% of master's graduates follow their studies with a doctorate in chemistry, physics or material sciences. This is particularly useful if you hope to pursue an upper management position.
  • The doctoral thesis usually takes three to four years to complete.
  • Further information on the path to a PhD at our faculty can be found here or on the website of the Graduate School Science and Technology.

Support

  • Relevant contact persons for topics such as BAföG, ERASMUS or examination committees can be found under Representatives and Committees.
  • Questions concerning teaching, can be directed to the programme director and programme advisors, whose information can be found here.
  • For all topics regarding examinations, please contact the respective examiner or the Examination Office directly.
  • Any questions concerning the organization of your studies can be directed to programme coordinator Dr. Torsten Staab.
