Master in Chemie to be offered in English as of the Winter Semester

02/25/2026

The change in language requirements aims to make the degree programme more international.

As of the Wintersemester 2026, our M.Sc. in Chemistry will be offered completely in English – no German language skills required! Students will have the opportunity to improve their academic language skills, preparing them for future work in academia and industry. The change also hopes to attract an increasing number of international students, offering German students resume-building advantages in soft skills such as intercultural communication.

The overall structure of the programme remains the same. Biochemistry is the only focus subject that, currently, still has one mandatory course taught in German. All other focus subjects will be taught primarily in English, with occasional exceptions in the elective courses.

Applicants will need to prove English proficiency at the B2 level. The following tests and certificates will be accepted:

  • the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 72 (internet-based TOEFL test) or
  • the International English Language Test System (IELTS) with a score of 6.0 or better or
  • a Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE) or
  • a minimum satisfactory grade in English (corresponding to at least 7 out of 15 points) in a domestic university entrance qualification (HZB) or a foreign HZB with proven knowledge of the English language that is at least equivalent to the aforementioned HZB, or
  • proof that you have already completed training (especially as part of your first degree) with English language skills at the above-mentioned level.
