09/20/2017Homoleptic Luminescent Lanthanide Frameworks with the Tricyanohydridoborate Anion

Abstract: The first lanthanide tricyanohydridoborates have been synthesized from anhydrous lanthanide chlorides and the oxonium salt (H3O)[BH(CN)3]. Thereby, the three-dimensional, homoleptic coordination polymers 3∞[Ln{BH(CN)3}3] (Ln = Eu, Tb) could be obtained in solvothermal reactions upon complete substitution of the chloride anions by [BH(CN)3]– anions. Both products exhibit intense and characteristic photoluminescence in the visible region through lanthanide-specific 4f–4f transitions with long luminescence decay times typical for the respective lanthanide ions. [BH(CN)3]– proves to be a suitable linker for new lanthanide coordination polymers.
