Direct recycling can provide secondary materials for the battery industry, but what barriers have to be overcome?
07/20/2026The 23rd International Meeting on Lithium Batteries (IMLB 2026) was held in Montreal, Canada from July 14-19th, 2026. This meeting was dedicated to Bruno Scrosati, who was a pioneer in battery research and organized the first IMLB in Rome in 1982.
IMLB 2026 covered a wide range of topics within the battery field from advanced materials to interface design, production to testing, and insights into next-generation technologies.
During the conference, Guinevere presented a talk over the activities in direct recycling at Fraunhofer ISC entitled “Overcoming Barriers to Effective Direct Recycling”, which discussed regeneration and upgrading of active materials during direct recycling processes.
“I am happy to highlight the important topic of recycling at a conference like IMLB. It is important for those in the battery community to remember that there is not one single recycling process or even one direct recycling process. The choice for the “best” recycling process depends on many parameters and must be optimized for a specific material stream to produce the best product.” Guinevere Giffin
