In 2009 Würzburg was very happy to achieve the 37th place worldwide, this time the chemistry department is placed even higher, at 31. Only three German universities are placed in the top 50 group, the Technical University of Munich (12th place), Würzburg and Göttingen (48th).

Withing Europe Würzburg has been put in 6th place in 2013, one place higher than in 2009.

Just as in 2009 Würzburg achieved the highest rating of all German universities in the only size-independent criterion: the percentage of publications in top journals.
