Summer (winter?) school in Windischleuba

27.03.2025

Castles, cats and lots of spins – we survived a week of hyperpolarization NMR and want a cookie.

In March, Justyna and Kersten attended a Summer School on Hyperpolarization NMR in Windischleuba. The event was organized by the research group of Jörg Matysik as a part of a larger series dedicated to different fields of NMR. The school took place in a castle, now repurposed as a youth hostel, which made the event’s setting quite unique. This intense week of lectures and exercises served as an introduction to the theory and applications of hyperpolarization NMR. Of course, there were plenty of networking opportunities with other NMR researchers, discussing projects and exploring possible collaborations. The spotlight however goes to the castle cat Bodo, who quickly stole the hearts of all participants, and maybe even learned a bit about the nuclear spins! To balance out the intense learning sessions, the group took a short trip to a silver mine in Freiberg, which offered a nice break. Overall, the time in Windischleuba was a fantastic, albeit a challenging experience, filled with new knowledge and plenty inspiration for future research.
