Siegfried Hünig Lecture 2013 will be given by Peter J. Stang

World renowned US scientist Peter J. Stang was happy to accept the invitation to give this year's Siegfried Hünig Lecture on May, 6th in Würzburg.

Peter J. Stang is a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of Utah and world renowned for his pioneering research in supramolecular chemistry. He was recently awarded the 2013 Priestley Medal, the American Chemical Society’s most prestigious honor, “for his preeminence in organic chemistry and pioneering of abiological self-assembly and supramolecular chemistry using the directional bonding approach.” Throughout his career he has authored over 480 publications, accumulated over 22,000 citations, and is listed by the Times Higher Education among the top 100 chemists with the highest citation impact scores. In addition to conducting cutting-edge research, he has served as editor for the Journal of the American Chemical Society since 2002.

Although his research spans a wide variety of topics, including the study of unsaturated reactive intermediates and polyvalent organoiodine chemistry, he is best known for constructing elaborate two- and three-dimensional polygons and polyhedra. Specifically, the directional bonding approach developed by Stang involves the self-assembly of metals and ligands that are pre-programmed to organize at desired angles to access discrete nanoscale architectures in high yield. By applying the directional bonding concept to Pt(II)-pyridyl coordination chemistry, his research group has reported the one-pot self-assembly of supramolecules as large as dodecahedra  from 50 individual components, effectively bringing molecular chemistry into the nanoscale. Prof. Stang’s extraordinary research achievements influence many diverse fields of chemical research.

Abiological Self-Assembly: Predesigned Metallacycles and Metallacages via Coordination. is the title chosen by Prof. Stang for the Siegfried Hünig Lecture 2013 which will take place on May, 6th at 4:45 pm in lecture hall B, located in the central building of the chemistry center.
