Ann-Christin Pöppler has been working at the Institute of Organic Chemistry at Julius-Maximilians-Universität (JMU) Würzburg since 2016, initially as a junior professor and now as a W2 professor of organic structural chemistry. On 16 November, the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie (FCI) awarded her a Lecturer Award for particularly qualified young scientists.

Years ago, during her school days, she almost turned her back on chemistry before two dedicated teachers awakened her enthusiasm for the subject. "Today, I like to share them with the people around me. This shows how helpful funding programmes – such as those of the FCI – can be in the early stages of chemical education," says Pöppler. To her the lecturer award is as an incentive to start the next teaching projects and research questions with extra motivation, enthusiasm and commitment.

Research in the Pöppler Group

In her research group at JMU, Ann-Christin Pöppler and her team investigate medical agents in polymer environments by approaching the topic from different perspectives. On the one hand, the characterization and description of such materials is to be improved, on the other hand, the working group aimes to derive and test design ideas for optimized materials from the improved structural understanding.

They use the versatile toolbox of NMR spectroscopy in combination with other complementary techniques. They want to gain insights into the complex arrangement of drug delivery systems at the molecular level, for example in multicomponent mixtures in solution, in (hydro-) gels and in solids.

Already honored several times

There have been several awards for Ann-Christin Pöppler in recent years. The focus is always on her ability to innovate didactically. In 2020, for example, she received the Fulbright Cottrell Award for her research and teaching project "Complementary Tools for the Characterization of complex Solid Materials". At the end of 2021, the "Prize for Good Teaching" of the Bavarian Ministry of Science followed. Its presentation in person took place just two days before the presentation of the lecturer award– resulting in an eventful week for her.

The lecturer award

The FCI's Lecturer Prize is awarded to particularly qualified young scientists in chemistry. Special scientific achievements of independent research work and above-average achievements in teaching are funded.
