Frank Würthner gives Emanuel Vogel Lecture 2015

10.12.2015

Frank Würthner has been invited to give this name lecture, which was established at the University of Cologne in 2014. He succeeds Nobel laureate Jean-Marie Lehn.

Ehrenpreis für die Emanuel-Vogel-Vorlesung 2015: Grafik eines Porphyrin-Moleküls des Künstlers H. J. Roth

The name lecture is a donation by Vogel’s scholar Dr. Engelbert Zass. It’s intended to demonstrate the impact of Vogel’s scientific work on current research topics. Emanuel Vogel succeeded Kurt Alder in 1961 and held the chair of organic chemistry at the University of Cologne until 1997.

Vogel made fundamental discoveries in the field of aromatic compounds. From the point of view of the colleagues from Cologne this year’s laureate Frank Würthner published seminal studies bearing relation to Vogel’s research. In particular, synthesis and application of functional dyes as materials for optoelectronics, photovoltaics and biomedical purposes are named. The award comes with a graphic art of a porphyrin molecule created by artist Hermann Josef Roth.

Frank Würthner`s lecture “Functional Nanosystems Based on Dye Aggregates” was given on December 7 in a crowded lecture hall (Kurt-Alder-Hörsaal) at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cologne.
