Summer School on 3D Printing Technologies - with a focus on photochemical and electrohydrodynamic techniques

 

Additive manufacturing technologies are widely described in the popular media as 3D printing, and have been described as something that will drive the 4th industrial revolution. For biomedical applications, 3D printing promises to transform the medical field by printing organs in hospitals, producing surgical planning models and cutting guides, and to advance research in areas such as cancer, such as kidney, nerve and bone regeneration. Industrial adoption of 3D printing has also been rapid, particularly for the aerospace and automotive industries. Metal 3D printing is used for high performance parts and can be manufactured at speeds fast than conventional parts. A new 3D printing technology, continuous liquid interface production (CLIP) has been adopted as a new method to fabricate commodities with superior performance. For these technologies to be fully utilized across the world in a cost-effective manner, this Summer School gives young researchers the “full picture” of the challenges that are faced in the various techniques and applications. The 3D printing Technologies Summer School will be held 16-20 July 2018.

Format and Program

 

Lectures in combination with workshops will be given by the speakers aiming at the deepening of knowledge about 3D printing technologies. A poster session will give the opportunity to all participants to present their own scientific results. Lab tours will showcase some of the most advanced melt electrowriting 3D printers in the world.

Furthermore, the Summer School is embedded into a diversified social program, e.g. a wine tasting in the historical wine cellars beneath the baroque building of the Residence Palace and a visit to the Röntgenring Museum.


Target audience

The school is aimed at advanced master- as well as PhD students or postdocs with a background in chemistry. Admission is limited to no more than 50 participants.


About Würzburg

The summer school will be held at the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy of the University of Würzburg, one of the top ranked chemistry faculties in Germany and Europe. Würzburg is a vibrant student town in northern Bavaria with several historic landmarks. The city can be conveniently reached by car, train or by air from Frankfurt airport (train connection to/from in 1:20h). The city with its population of 130.000 is known not only for the international reputation of its University with 26.000 students, but also for its rich historic heritage (part of the UNESCO world heritage) and for its rich regional winemaking culture.

Location

The summer school will take place in the rooms and labs of the Department for functional materials in medicine and dentistry University of Würzburg. The lectures will be given in the "Külpe" lecture hall which is part of the old eye clinic. Nearby the historical lab of the famous nobel laureate Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen is located.
