Following the foundation stone ceremony in the morning of July, 11 for the Center for Nanosystem Chemistry (CNC) at the University of Würzburg, this outreach symposium fostered the interaction between members of the CNC research center in Würzburg with scientist from abroad. The goal of the symposium was to provide an overview on the various topics of research on nanosystems chemistry that are covered at CNC. These include fundamental work on the formation of nanomaterials by self-assembly processes, the design of supramolecular photocatalysts, the development of complex functional bulk materials for organic electronics and photovoltaics, and biosupramolecular constructs for applications in life science.

The Plenary Speakers provided insights into the currently best organic solar cells (work of P. Bäuerle/Ulm together with German Company Heliatek), fundamental processes within dye-based photosystems (C. Lambert/Würzburg) and the development of macrocyclic host molecules for the recognition and decomposition of warfare reagents (S. Kubik, Kaiserslautern) in water.

15 invited lectures and a large number of poster presentations gave fantastic insights into the current research activities on functional nanosystems in different parts of the world.
